Esther (Tess) Simpson (1903–1996) joined the Academic Assistance Council in 1933 as an assistant secretary. She became the secretary of the Society for Protection of Science in Learning in 1939. As secretary, she was responsible for interaction with the refugee scholars and their families and preparing dossiers for evaluation of their credentials for academic positions and later for freedom from internment.
