Downloading (Cardiovascular Interactions) from the Web
28 May 2002
The files are a "Supplement" to the Advances in Physiolology Education paper by Rothe & Gersting at: http://advan.physiology.org.

The Project was designed to be run under Microsoft Windows 95 to XP and should have a computer running at > 150 MHz. The self-extracting compressed files of the CVI project can be expanded into a folder on your computer, or onto an Iomega Zip Drive and run from there. The expanded files can be copied to a CD, distributed to students, and run from the CD. (The author owns the copyright and grants permission to copy the project for not-for-profit educational use.)

With questions, contact the author at: crothe{at}iupui.edu
Please inform the author
of your opinion about the strengths and applicability of the Project, and any errors or detracting weaknesses.
Suggestions for changes are welcome.

There are three self-expanding PKzipped files:

  1. "CVI_CD.exe" contains the "CVI.exe" file and about 42 other files, including 16 small image files, seven *.dll files, four text files, and four _Readme Instruction files, including a copy of this file. The compressed file is 3.1MB and expands to 6.9 MB.
  2. "AVI Main Menu.exe" contains a very helpful five-minute audio-video overview of the Project (1.9 MB expanding to 12.6 MB)
  3. "CVI Audio Video clips.exe" has three clips describing the use of the Model, Tutorial, and Saving your Lab Book and are of particular use if you get confused or lost in using the Project. The file is 7.4MB and expands to 40MB.

Each file contains the software for expanding it to a useable application.

DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK one of the above files before you have specified a target folder. (It will expand into the C:\ root !!)

Extracting the project

  1. Download the two smaller zip files into the Temp or Temporary file of your C drive.  (Download the other three AVI clip files in "CVI Audio Video clips", if needed.)

    Using Windows Explorer:

  2. Create a folder for the project, using File > New > and Folder on the C drive and name it: "C:\CVI\" (This assures a specific place for the files other than some odd place on the C drive!)
  3. Extract the compressed self-expanding files by:
    1. Go to your Temporary file to display the downloaded files.
    2. Double-click the zipped file: 'CVI_CD.exe'
    3. In the pane that appears, note the textbox beside "Extract to:
Browse to find 'C:\': (double click to place it in the box), and CVI\ (double-lick to add it) and then add (by typing )"CVI_CD",
(DO NOT press Enter. The names are not case sensitive.)
      It should read: "C:\CVI\CVI_CD"
    4. Click "Prompt" for overwrite
      Click "Messages"
      Click "Extract"
    5. Respond to "Create C:\CVI\CVI_CD directory" with Yes
  4. Run the Project from the "C:\CVI\CVI_CD" folder by double-clicking CVI_CD, highlight the CVI.exe file and double-click it.
Once you have found the "CVI.exe" file (and if functions OK), right-click it, choose "Make Shortcut", click and drag the shortcut to the Desktop. (You can minimize the Windows Explore pane to reveal a part of the Desktop.)
  5. Repeat step 3 above to Extract the AVI files. Use "AVI files" .instead of CVI_CD to read: C:\CVI\AVI files
  6. Play an avi file by browsing to find it in the 'C:\CVI\AVI files' folder and double click it to activate your Media Player to play it.
Alternatively from: Start > Program > Accessories > Entertainment > double click Windows Media Player. Then browse to the "*.avi" files and double-click the one needed.
