Physiology laboratory experience for high school students

Recently, we were charged with providing a learning opportunity for high
school students participating in the Upward Bound Regional Math and Science
Program, a program designed to stimulate interest in mathematics and
science for students from disadvantaged environments. Our challenge was to
introduce students to the joys, excitement, and mystery of physiology and
to stimulate their interest for future study. To this end, we developed a
laboratory experience that examined basic physiological concepts in an
animal model. This opportunity introduced students to how their bodies work
and the importance of the use of animals in research. The students left the
experience confident, motivated, and excited about learning.
